Analysis: Beyond Chinese New Year data skew, a bear lurks (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Trying to track China’s economic course during the Lunar New Year can leave analysts howling at the moon. January auto sales tumbled, yet oil imports were the third highest on record. A measure of factory activity picked up, but trade data was weak.

A closer examination of the numbers shows bearish signals lurking beneath the confusing headlines.

Western banking analysts accustomed to a solar calendar that dates from Roman times have their run-ins with China’s even more ancient lunar calendar every year. Sometimes the new year holiday lands in January, as it did this year. But last year it was in February, wreaking havoc with year-on-year comparisons.

The latest calendar clash comes when China’s economy is under an unusually bright spotlight, as economists try to figure out how dramatically it is slowing. A mild cooldown would be a welcome development for inflation-wary Beijing; a sharp slump could kick out the last sturdy pillar underpinning global growth.

Data released so far shows headline figures for almost everything were down in January, when almost half the month was taken up by the holiday. Comparing the figures with the prior year or even the prior month can be misleading.

But the steel and export sectors looked particularly weak, even factoring in the holiday effect, leaving some analysts worried that the soft patch runs deeper than the lunar cycle.

Exports fell by 0.5 percent and imports by a much steeper 15.3 percent, the Customs Administration said on Friday.

But nestled amid all the gloomy figures were some surprisingly upbeat data points. A January survey on China’s factory sector was sunnier than expected. China’s crude oil imports surged 7.4 percent in January to the third-highest level on record, which doesn’t mesh with a severe economic slowdown.

“Our simple and humble suggestion is to wait for February data to come out and read two months’ data together,” said Ting Lu of Bank of America Merrill Lynch with weariness born of long experience.

That’s what the Chinese government does. It lumps together the figures most influenced by factory closures, like industrial production and output data, into a combined January-February figure. The Lunar New Year never falls outside those months.

While the January data by itself always gives a distorted picture, some of the numbers that can be parsed show the impact of the debt crisis affecting China’s trading partners.

For instance, the processing trade, wherein Chinese factories import raw materials to make goods for export, saw a steeper drop than did overall trade in January. Processing trade fell 9.8 percent, versus a 5.4 percent drop in overall trade.

Most analysts pointed to a slowdown in Europe as a cause for concern, and indeed bilateral trade fell 7.1 percent versus 3.9 percent for trade with the United States, where the economy has shown signs of stabilising.

But trade with Japan was hurt the most, falling by 18.4 percent, while Southeast Asian trade was down by 10.6 percent.

Further breakdowns showed that overall trade fell most sharply for China’s traditional export powerhouses, reflecting to some extent a shift of export manufacturing to inland provinces where wages are lower. Total trade from Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shandong all took a hit, while inland areas like Chongqing and Henan saw exports double.

COOL COMMODITIES DATA

Headline commodity figures are also too impacted by the holiday to be of much use. But here, a few signs point to domestic demand weakness.

Many analysts noted lower iron ore imports. Two signs indicate that this is due to more than the holidays — inventories in Chinese ports are high, and steel output slowed to 1.67 million tonnes a day in latter part of the month, compared with nearly 2 million tonnes in the summer of 2011.

Since shutting down a furnace is so costly, the lower runs reflect a drop in demand from the hard-hit construction sector rather than the holiday. [ID:nL4E8DA0X5].

The value of oil imports, which account for about 15 percent of total import value, rose much more than the volume of oil imports in January — reflecting higher oil prices than last year. Without that bump, import values would have been even lower.

China’s copper purchases tend to be another good sign of the economy’s health. In this case, volumes were up as buyers took advantage of a drop in international prices to around $8,000 a tonne, versus $9,500 the year before.

But more volatile scrap copper imports are an indicator of how tight spot demand is for copper, and those dropped sharply.

The calendar dictates that overall data should be down.

The new moon that heralded the Year of the Dragon fell on January 23, 2012, while the Year of the Rabbit began on February 3, 2011.

So for white collar office workers, that meant 17 official working days versus 20 working days in January 2011. Factories generally operate on weekends, complicating the calculation.

Simply discounting last year’s January data by the 15 percent drop in official working days could still give too strong a forecast.

Many factories begin shutting and workers headed home as much as two weeks before the actual New Year. Chinese ports and customs bureaux tend not to pick up the pace of processing cargoes until after the Lantern Festival, which falls on the full moon two weeks after the New Year, or February 6 this year.

That puts most of the unofficial holiday squarely in January this year. Last year, by contrast, all of January fit into the pre-holiday season.

The offset helps explain the higher-than-expected inflation data in January this year. Prices in Chinese markets tend to rise before the holiday, as more people stock up for a home-cooked feast and winter weather impedes transportation.

“Of course there’s seasonality, but that can’t explain all of it,” said Dong Tao, chief economist for non-Japan Asia at Credit Suisse.

“Iron ore and commodities imports fell markedly. This directly reflects China’s economic situation, that the demand is not there.”

It’s a big week for?Kickstarter. As well as a shoutout??IFC comedy series “Portlandia,” in an episode that airs Friday, the fundraising site hit another record via?the Elevation Dock, a high end iPhone 4/4S cradle, which became the very first Kickstarter to break the million dollar mark, a few hours before Double Fine hit that number.

The TikTok+LunaTik Multi-Touch Watch Kit, a wristwatch cradle for the iPod Nano, held the previous record for most money earned for a single fundraising effort, generating $942,578. Many believe that his success is the first crucial step towards a massive shake-up of the traditional business mode that governs video game business. It’s a change that quite a few have been begging for, hopeful to see game sequels that have yet to be green lit, despite a strong demand, all because the powers that be are skittish for whatever reason.

An example of this can be found in a post by Destructoid?yesterday, in which contributors were asked games that they’d like to see be “Kickstarted” into reality. Most notable is the inclusion of “Mega Man Legends 3,” a title that many devotees of the Mega Man series were happy to finally see happen after a decade’s worth of waiting, only to be later disappointed?when it was cancelled by Capcom, its publisher. The reason cited was lack of potential profitability, which is exactly the attitude that caused Schafer to resort to an alternate means of fundraising to being with.

Not everyone is entirely convinced that rules have changed completely. Kotaku?notes that Double Fine’s success gives hopes to established game producers to tap into their dedicated fan-base ? but for everyone else, including the little guys, the traditional model established by publishers still rules the landscape. Unless you’re a beloved creator with cult status or a very small outfit running a barebones operation, publishers are necessary to pitch games to, since it costs so much to create a title these days.

At the very least, industry watchers hope publishers will pay closer attention to what game players want, in addition to game creators, a sentiment that is echoed in another Kotaku editorial, published Thursday. Because, in the end, all the interest and potential revenue that Double Fine’s new game has generated thus far is money that is not reaching any of publisher’s pockets.

But everything changed on the night of February 7, 2009. Brown’s assault on girlfriend Rihanna would change the career trajectories of both, catapulting one to superstardom and launching the other on an unlikely comeback trail. Three years later, with the two stars are poised to return to the Grammy stage, MTV News looks back.

February 7, 2009: Rihanna hits the stage at a pre-Grammy party hosted by producer Timbaland in Los Angeles. The Bajan stunner performs her smash “Umbrella,” among other tunes. Earlier that night, she’s snapped looking cheerful with boyfriend Chris Brown at music honcho Clive Davis’ annual Grammy bash.

February 8, 2009: Reports surface that Brown and a female passenger was involved in a car accident. E! News confirms that neither Rihanna, nor Brown will appear at the Grammy Awards ceremony that night; both were scheduled to perform. The Los Angeles Police Department begin investigating an alleged felony battery report against the Virginia crooner.

February 19, 2009: TMZ posts a gruesome photo of Rihanna taken by LAPD just after the February assault. The image of the singer — bruised, eyes swollen and mouth split — confirms what had been rumor up until then. Then-19-year-old Brown becomes the subject of public outrage. The backlash is only beginning, though, as radio stations across the country announce bans on Brown’s music.

June 22, 2009: Brown has been mostly quiet, on the advice, he says, of his representatives. In May, Vibe publishes a cover story, “Tainted Love,” delving into how the young couple unraveled. It’s a more nuanced portrait that describes both Brown’s and Rihanna’s upbringing in households rife with domestic violence. It’s also announced that Brown will strike a plea deal giving him 180 days of community service.

The same month, the “Forever” singer uploads a video apology to the Web: “I’ve told Rihanna countless times and I’m telling you today, I’m truly, truly sorry that I wasn’t able to handle the situation both differently and better,” he pleads.

September 2, 2009: Brown tapes an interview with CNN’s “Larry King Live.” Accompanied by his attorney, the singer — seldom off-pitch onstage — struggles to strike the right chord. But even His unfortunate choice of neckwear comes under scrutiny.

November 6, 2009: Rihanna sits down for a “20/20″ special, detailing for anchor Diane Sawyer her assault at the hands of Brown.

Android Central at Mobile World Congress Samsung apparently has also said it's not announcing the Galaxy S III at Mobile World Congress. It's also not explicitly said that the Galaxy S III exists, but whatever.

So that's where we stand. Samsung is not having a press conference, nor is it planning to show off a phone it hasn't actually announced in the first place. But it'll have other stuff. Gotcha.

Green Homes Market Expected to Increase Five-Fold by 2016 ? Up …

ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ ??McGraw-Hill Construction, a part of The McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE: MHP), today released findings from a new Green Home Builders and Remodelers Study at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) International Builders’ Show in Orlando. Green homes comprised 17% of the overall residential construction market in 2011 and are expected to grow to between 29% and 38% of the market by 2016. By value, this equates to a five-fold increase, growing from $17 billion in 2011 to $87-$114 billion in 2016, based on the five-year forecast for overall residential construction.

According to the study, construction industry professionals report an even steeper increase in green home remodeling; 34% of remodelers expect to be doing mostly green work by 2016, a 150% increase over 2011 activity levels. Many home builders have shifted to the remodeling market due to the drastic drop in new home construction. In fact, 62% of the builders who do both new and remodeling work verified that the economy has increased their renovation work.

“The housing market is critical to the U.S. economy,” said Harvey M. Bernstein, VP of Industry Insights and Alliances, McGraw-Hill Construction, “and the results of our study show that despite the drastic downturn in housing starts since 2008, green has grown significantly as a share of activity? indicating that the green market is becoming an important part of our overall economic landscape.”

The green home building study, produced by McGraw-Hill Construction in conjunction with the NAHB and Waste Management, is designed to provide key insights into market opportunities, backed by proprietary research surveys and the power of the Dodge database. The study reveals business benefits afforded by green building, such as a competitive marketing advantage: 46% of builders and remodelers find that “building green” makes it easier to market themselves in a down economy, and an overwhelming 71% of firms that are dedicated to green home building report the same.

“This study demonstrates phenomenal growth in green building and indicates that we can expect even larger increases in the coming years,” said NAHB Chairman Barry Rutenberg, a home builder from Gainesville, Fla. “In a sample of NAHB builder and remodeler members, nearly 90% reported building green at some level. This is a powerful testament to the importance of green home building?and transforms the way we think of homes overall.”

By 2016, many more builders anticipate that they will be dedicated to green building work on over 90% of projects? 33% expect to be dedicated to green work in 2016, up from 17% in 2011. Remodeling will grow even more dramatically? 22% of remodelers report that they anticipate they will be dedicated to green work in 2016, nearly triple the 8% who report being dedicated to green work in 2011. These builders are clued into the revenue opportunity afforded by green building and know that home buyers will pay more for green homes, according to 61% of builders and 66% of remodelers.

“Home buyers and builders increasingly want to do what’s right for the environment,” said Jim Halter, VP for Construction Solutions, Waste Management. “This trend has been taking off within our business as customers look to recycle and divert more materials from landfills. We’re excited to see the results of the study; they validate the services we offer.”

Many factors are driving the green homes market, with “higher quality” and “increases in energy costs” topping the list, indicating that today’s green homebuyer is not just a green consumer. Buyers recognize that green homes have lower bills due to higher building performance. The reported costs of building a green home have also gone down significantly. Builders report that the cost to go green is now 7%, as compared to 10% in 2008 and 11% in 2006.

While green is growing across the U.S., three regions are seeing higher than average growth. The West Coast has seen the highest green growth; the Midwest’s northern region, west of the Mississippi, is second highest; and New England ranks third.
